Artificial Intelligence (AI)-Based Digital Payment Systems in India:Opportunities, Challenges, and Future Prospects

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming India's digital payment ecosystem by improving transaction security, operational efficiency, customer experience, and financial inclusion. The increasing adoption of AI-enabled technologies in digital payment platforms has enhanced fraud detection, risk management, personalized services, and decision-making. This study examines the opportunities, challenges, and future prospects of AI-based digital payment systems in India through a descriptive and analytical review of secondary data collected from peer-reviewed journals, RBI and NPCI reports, government publications, and other reliable sources. The findings indicate that AI has significantly improved the efficiency and security of digital payment systems. However, issues such as data privacy, cybersecurity, regulatory compliance, ethical concerns, and digital literacy continue to challenge its widespread adoption. The study concludes that AI can play a vital role in the future of India's digital payment ecosystem, provided its implementation is supported by effective governance, responsible AI practices, and a strong regulatory framework.
