Industry 4.0 is reshaping manufacturing by connecting digital technologies in novel ways that unlock new possibilities for sustainable innovation and eco-efficient industrial performance. This review investigates the link between the Industry 4.0 technologies, the sustainable innovation in industry and management and engineering integration. The key technologies of Industrial Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, big data analytics, digital twins, cyber-physical systems and additive manufacturing are analyzed with respect to product, process and organisational innovations. The review will also take into account their role in improving energy efficiency, in resource use, waste and emissions reduction, predictive maintenance, productivity and operational cost reduction. The results show that sustainability outcomes are not only determined by the deployment of technologies but also by organizational capabilities, strategic investment, skills of employees, leadership, and data-driven performance management. To combine the technological capacities, sustainable innovation and eco-efficient industrial performance, an integrated management – engineering framework is hence recommended.
