Infrastructure Development, Environmental Justice and Tribal Communities in the Indian Himalayan Region A Community-Centred Perspective

Infrastructure development in the Indian Himalayan region has improved connectivity and energy access but has also created significant environmental and livelihood challenges for tribal communities. This study examines these impacts through an environmental justice perspective, focusing on distribution, recognition, and participation. Using secondary sources and selected case studies of hydropower, dam, and highway development, the study highlights displacement, livelihood loss, ecological degradation, and increased vulnerability to environmental hazards. It also examines the extent to which tribal rights, local knowledge, and community participation are incorporated into infrastructure-related decision-making. The study argues that sustainable Himalayan development requires greater attention to ecological protection, tribal rights, livelihood security, and meaningful community participation.
