This study investigates the acoustic challenges in outdoor performance spaces, focusing on traditional Theyyam performances in Kerala, India. These performances occur in open temple courtyards and sacred groves where sound distribution becomes uneven, resulting in poor audibility and audience discomfort. Unlike enclosed auditoriums, outdoor amphitheatres are influenced by environmental factors such as wind, vegetation, landform, and background noise, which affect acoustic performance.
The research adopts a comparative case study approach analysing four outdoor performance venues including Natarani Theatre, Cloud Tower Austria, Odeon of Pompeii, and Bamboo Amphitheatre Brazil. Parameters such as form, material, spatial arrangement, and landscape integration were evaluated.
Findings indicate that topography, reflective materials, semi-circular geometry, and stage canopies significantly improve sound clarity and projection. The study proposes context-sensitive acoustic design guidelines for culturally rooted outdoor performance spaces.
This research contributes to Acoustic Performance-Based Design (APBD) by integrating environmental and cultural factors for improving acoustic performance in traditional outdoor theatres.
