Safe, accessible and convenient pedestrian facilities are essential for sustainable urban mobility to promote walking and mitigate road traffic risks. The crosswalk behavior and the foot overbridges (FOB) relationship and the effectiveness of safety intervention in sustainable urban transport planning is reviewed. It discusses human and behavioural factors, infrastructure conditions, and traffic dynamics influencing pedestrian crossing decisions. In addition to engineering, behavioural, enforcement, and integrated safety interventions, the review assesses FOB accessibility, location, connectivity, and user-convenience. Effectiveness of pedestrian facilities is strongly affected by pedestrian preferences, road conditions, and accessibility requirements, in addition to the provision of pedestrian facilities. Pedestrian-oriented planning, inclusive design, appropriate speed control and context-specific interventions are all critical to improving safety. Enhancing the collection and long-term assessment of crashes can also contribute to evidence-based policies for safer and more sustainable urban mobility, especially in Indian cities and other developing urban settings.
